Pal♡world! ~More Than Just Pals~ looks surprisingly warm for a game whose official page asks whether you will make friends, become lovers, or dismantle and eat them.
D-dismantle and eat them...?
That line caught me off guard, but in a good way. A darker twist is hardly unusual for Palworld, yet I didn't expect its dating sim to take the idea quite that far. As a fan of Doki Doki Literature Club, the possibility of a warm romance becoming strange or unsettling makes me more interested, not less.
The latest special video adds to that curiosity. During its darker sequence, we briefly see what appears to be a Pal Sphere, followed by Lovander lying injured and bleeding. There is not enough context to know what happened, but it was one of the moments that stayed with me after the trailer ended.

More than an April Fools' joke
Pocketpair first presented More Than Just Pals in its 2024 April Fools' announcement trailer. What could have disappeared after one joke now has an official Steam page, a dedicated game page, ten announced characters and multiple promotional videos. It is a very different use of relationships from Palworld: Palfarm, where they sit alongside farming and community life.
The game takes place at Palpagos Private Academy, where you play as a transfer student and meet human characters alongside familiar Pals reimagined for a school romance. Conversations can bring you closer to them as friends or potential partners, while Pocketpair continues to hint that some relationships may become much less wholesome.
The concept is still funny, but the 2026 special video explicitly says the game is in development. Pocketpair still has not announced a release date.
The darker possibilities are part of the appeal
That brief image of Lovander is why the horror warning interests me. It could belong to a bad outcome, a particular storyline or something happening around the academy, but Pocketpair has not explained the scene or what it means for the game's story.
What I enjoyed about Doki Doki Literature Club was not simply that it became scary. It used the familiar appearance of a romance visual novel before taking the story somewhere unexpected. That unpredictability is part of the appeal for me here too.
I am not assuming More Than Just Pals will follow the same structure or reach the same level of horror. I am simply glad Pocketpair seems willing to explore darker territory instead of treating every relationship as a harmless joke.
It looks like a genuine visual novel
The art style and music are another reason the project has my attention. Its colorful character art, school backgrounds and gentle soundtrack remind me of classic romance visual novels.
That matters because the joke alone would probably wear thin. A school romance built around familiar Pals is funny as a premise, but a full game still needs characters worth learning about and relationships worth following.
Nurse Saya is already the character I am most curious about. Pocketpair presents her as a glamorous school nurse whom students trust with their problems, but her description also teases a forbidden romance behind the closed door of the nurse's office. That mix of reassuring and slightly dangerous fits the game's tone almost too well.
The softer presentation also makes the stranger moments more effective. One scene feels like a light school romance, while the next introduces blood, suspicious choices or another reminder that this is still Palworld.
What will decide whether it works
The biggest question is whether the relationships and choices have enough depth to carry a full game. A funny premise can carry a trailer, but it cannot carry an entire story by itself.
If Saya's reassuring nurse persona and Lovander's injured scene belong to relationships that change meaningfully with my choices, the contrast will feel earned. If the horror appears only in isolated shock scenes, the premise may wear thin.
That is what will decide whether More Than Just Pals is only a surprisingly elaborate joke or a dating sim I want to replay.
Saya may be my first choice, but I doubt she will be my last.
